Math Institute

NJ ASK, GEPA & HSPA Math Institutes
Presented by Paul Lawrence/Jim Rahn, LL Teach

Each workshop in this series incorporates the same pedagogical techniques that are recommended for effective classroom instruction. Participants will be actively engaged and will leave with practical hands-on, discovery-based lessons and appropriate assessment instruments that can easily be implemented into any classroom.

Grades 3-4 Essential Lessons for Geometry and Algebraic Thinking on the NJ ASK

PA128-34 Cost: $125. Per Participant includes workshop materials, refreshments and lunch

Description: After a brief overview of the necessity to include discovery-based hands-on high interest activities designed to engage students, participants will become actively involved in learning ways to provide students with the crystal clear understanding and attachment of the understanding to higher level, non-routine questions.
Specifically, this workshop will include an estimation activity that encompasses all units of measure and uses 11 pin by 11 pin geoboards to classify shapes, master coordinates and investigate basic geometric concepts. Children's literature will be used to investigate flips, slides, turns, and tiling. Work with cubes, pattern blocks, and problem solving sets for algebraic thinking activities. Participants will leave with sample questions and activities that can be easily implemented into any classroom.

Date: Thursday, January 3
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Location: ETTC

Grades 5-6 Essential Lessons for Geometry and Algebraic Thinking on the NJ ASK

PA128-56 Cost: $125.

Some of the activities include working with 11 pin by 11 pin geoboards to model coordinates, create and classify shapes, explore symmetry and transformations, and determine area and perimeter. Cubes will be used to explore volume. Pattern blocks and cubes will be used to introduce algebraic thinking. Connections to integers and beginning work with order of operations will also be completed. Participants will leave with sample questions and activities that can be easily implemented into any classroom.

Date: Friday, January 4
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Location: ETTC

Grade 7 Essential Lessons for Geometry and Algebraic Thinking on the GEPA and NJ ASK

PA128-7 Cost: $125.

Some of the activities include working with 11 pin by 11 pin geoboards to determine the area of irregular shapes as well as to develop transformational concepts. Algebra tiles and problem solving will be used to create and evaluate expressions as well as to solve equations and inequalities. Some work with functions and line of best will also be included. Participants will leave with sample questions and activities that can be easily implemented into any classroom.

Date: Tuesday, January 29
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Grades 4-6 Learn How to Use Your TI-15 Explorer Calculator

MA874 Cost: $125. Per Participant includes workshop materials, refreshments and lunch

Description: This workshop is for teachers in grades 4-6 who use the TI-15 Explorer calculator in their classrooms. Teachers will learn how this pedigogically sound tool can help students make connections between classroom learning and real-world situations. The TI-15 Explorer combines the fraction capabilities of the Math Explorer with a two-line display, problem solving, place value, and more. When the TI-15 Explorer is cmbined with traditional learning tools, it helps students explore mathematics through investigation and experimentation, and helps develop skills in addition, subtraction, powers, and answer format.

Date:Monday, February 4
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Location: ETTC
Hours: 5
